The Volvo 240 is a car that was produced from 1974-1993, and designed by Jan Wilsgaard. Jan’s philosophy of design was “Follow the laws of nature and don’t complicate matters! Functional and sensible designs are often the best looking.”

Not only was it one of the first cars on the road to address the function of sustainability, it is also a car that was designed to last for decades. The Volvo 240 possesses that intangible quality that makes us aware of the undeniable truth that modern items are not made with the same intention of design. A functional and practical design that is not meant to be a throw-away object is a statement against the perceived normalcy of planned obsolescence in our modern culture. Using these cars as an example, how can we learn from the past to impress upon the future of design. We know it is possible to make lasting pieces of infrastructure that can be simple, sustainable, and functional.
