Why are demographics of art programs so homogeneous? What are the reasons for minorities not pursuing careers in art? How can levels of diversity in art programs be increased? If art reflects culture, why is the art in our diverse society produced and consumed by so few of us? These and other questions emerge when considering diversity and the arts.
Under the advisement of PSU graphic design professor Matt Livengood, PSU graphic design students, Alyx Jolivet, Laura Jones, and Angelica Mendoza began investigating how to bring issues of diversity to young people who may not realize the inequalities existing in the art world.
This exhibition showcases the creative processes behind their designs for visual messages to under-represented students in the Portland Public School system that aim to encourage enrollment in post-secondary art programs.
