About the position
We are seeking a Senior Graphic Designer to join our team in Portland, OR. If you are passionate about using visual communication and maps to tell stories focused on enabling people to bike, walk, and use transit more often, this position is for you. As a Graphic Designer, you will be responsible for brand development, design, and production of materials for digital, print, and fabricated mediums. This position has a special focus environmental/experiential graphic design and wayfinding. In addition, you may be involved in a range of general graphic design projects requiring both creative and technical skills, icon/symbol design, typography, complex infographics, and print collateral.
Our in-house Graphic Design team works closely with a multi-disciplinary team of planners, landscape architects, and engineers. We create graphics for a wide variety of projects including: wayfinding and sign systems for trails; planning and user maps; bicycle and pedestrian master plans; marketing and outreach campaigns; digital and print media campaigns; bicycle/pedestrian safety education; walking/biking events; and Safe Routes to School programs.
**Due to COVID-19 this position may temporarily start out as a work from home position. However, this position requires that the employee be based near one of the Alta offices listed above, as in-office attendance (at least twice a week) may be required when it is safe to return to the office.**
Summary + Overview
This exempt position is responsible for supporting project, proposal, and marketing efforts and activities, and ensuring deliverables have a high visual impact and are relevant to the target audience.
Position Priorities
A thorough understanding of graphic design principles, color palettes, and printing methods and techniques is required in order to successfully meet the requirements of this position.
The essential priorities of this exempt, salaried position are to:
Conceptualize and develop branding and graphic design elements for print and web for both internal and external deliverables.
Develop design briefs, including gathering information and data through research.
Responsibilities + Tasks
Additional responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Creating strong visuals and materials from concept to completion including strategizing, sketching, designing, and producing materials and visual references.
Preparing project deliverables including infographics, typography, maps, lengthy documents such as reports and grant applications, and other layouts.
Preparing production-ready files; managing and coordinating production of materials as appropriate.
Optimizing photography for print and web-ready projects.
Ensuring accuracy in all graphic-based documents including copyediting and proofreading.
Requirements
This position requires a combination of skills, experience and education including, but not limited to:
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related field of study.
Five (5) or more years of experience as a Graphic Designer.
Environmental/Experiential Graphic Design experience with an emphasis on wayfinding.
Demonstrated ability to take a project from concept to completion.
Exhibits visual sense, the ability to think creatively, and a portfolio showcasing experiences in typography, color, layout, map making, basic web design, and print and digital-ready files.
Exhibits strong initiative and the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and multiple simultaneous projects involving cross-functional project teams.
Strong professional ethics, leadership skills, accountability, and decision-making capabilities.
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication and analytic skills.
Exhibits accuracy, attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, or similar products.
Preferred Skills + Certifications
There are a number of additional skills, experience and education that would be beneficial to this position including, but not limited to:
Master’s Degree in Graphic Design or a related field of study.
Experience managing and mentoring staff.
What We Offer
Compensation
The pay range for this job in Portland, OR is $71,000-$89,000 annually. Placement within the range is based upon experience, skill-sets, and qualifications.
Alta offers comprehensive benefits to all full-time employees.
Medical: PPO or HSA medical plans, Alta pays 75% of the cost.
Dental/Vision: PPO, Alta pays 90% of the cost.
Life Insurance: Alta pays 100% of the premium for life and AD&D, equal to your base compensation.
401k: Alta provides a safe harbor match up to 4%.
PTO: 21 days accrued annually to start.
Holidays: 11 total company paid holidays
