The Pacific Sentinel is a monthly student-run publication that seeks to involve and uplift student voices in the style of The Atlantic / The New Yorker but we also like to punch like a weekly.
previous digital copies of the printed publication can be viewed here: https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/pacificsentinel/
The Production Editor is the Art Director for our fully student run monthly publication which includes a physical copy and online content.
This is a paid position: $1,500 per term with hourly expectations of 15–20 hours per week. Those hours are flexible, the end of each month will definitely be busiest.
This position is ideal for someone who is interested in building a robust portfolio and likes to work quickly while still producing brilliant work. It is also a plus if the prospect of long production days smashing out something you’re stoked to see printed excites you.
The job is two-fold:
Design AND oversee (and recruit) other designers and illustrators who will help you produce engaging layouts of our publication.
This includes: articles, the cover, illustrations, comics, typography, infographics and beyond!
Style? Good, professional, exciting. Yeah its a vague description but I am looking for someone with a strong artistic voice who is confident but also adapts to the needs of a professional publication.
You will be encouraged to recruit other designers to assist you with layout, illustrations, etc. (this will make your workload lighter!)
You will be working alongside and reporting to the Editor in Chief (me), section editors (opinion, news, politics, etc.) will provide you ideas to work with as well, but this would be your magazine. We all want to be proud of the way it looks and are looking forward to working with someone who can steer our graphic ship.
You must be a student at PSU taking a minimum of 6 credits per term with an institutional GPA of 2.5 or higher for undergraduate students and 3.0 or higher for graduate students.
This is an amazing opportunity for the right person and I look forward to reviewing your application!
