Marketing & PR volunteer

Design Week Portland (http://www.designweekportland.com) is the only event in the Northwest that celebrates design in each and every discipline. During one full week in October, DWP engages and inspires design enthusiasts — from the professional practitioner to the student and increasingly, to the greater public — to gather and engage in conversations, lectures, exhibits, and events at diverse locations throughout the city. This year’s festival will take place October 7-12.

A hand-selected team of organizers, creatives, designers, writers, web developers, and new media innovators make it possible for DWP to express its culture and create an inspiring, cohesive and meaningful experience for attendees through events, collateral and design.

This position will be involved with all aspects of the PR and marketing process which includes (but is not limited to) the following duties:

Coordinate writing and artwork for social media, newsletters, and collateral
Engage audience on social media
Build and schedule e-newsletters
Proofread content and deliverables
Analytics, research and reporting

Maintenance of press library and clippings
Assist in facilitating media relations requests
Assist with the development and updating of media lists and other databases
Draft preliminary press releases, format finalized releases

Explore new tools and help in bettering current systems
Assist in managing timelines & calendars

The right applicant will possess the following skills and experience:
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Social media savvy (Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Google and other social media platforms)
Self-sufficiency, strong attention to detail, ambition to learn and ability to self-direct
Ability to skillfully and thoughtfully answer one’s own questions through research and resourcefulness
Ability to design and publish PDF’s and do basic graphics or image manipulation
Demonstrated computer skills with office applications, design application and databases
Adept at doing research to find the best solutions to problems
Ability to multi-task multiple projects
Ability to work under short deadlines & shifting priorities

Ideal candidates would be able to work 10-15 hours per week through the summer, with ramp-up to more hours as the festival nears. October 7-12 will be intense for social media, so ample availability that week is a must. Schedules are flexible, however, and will be based on individual needs. Candidates should also have access to their own laptop and smartphone.
