Student Graphic Designer

Position open only to Portland State graphic design majors who have passed sophomore portfolio review.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design print and digital assets for The School of Business at Portland State University using Adobe Create Cloud applications
• Conduct necessary research and make appropriate design decisions
• Utilize typography, layout and illustration skills to create original design materials
• Use photographs thoughtfully and appropriately in design concepts
• Practice proper file management/formatting and maintain a high standard for organization
• Properly format files for output to print vendors
• Contribute and assist in overall marketing and communications efforts
• Communicate regular progress updates to supervisors via email and project management software
• Maintain email account with a 24-hour response to staff inquiries
• Attend staff meetings and trainings when necessary
EXPECTATIONS
• Work quickly and be able to finish projects under assigned time constraints and deadlines
• Conceptualize design campaigns
• Keep open channels of communication with supervisor, coworkers and staff within the department
• Demonstrate an invested interest in expanding all forms of design
• Hold and adhere to regularly scheduled office hours
• Effectively work with a wide variety of areas within the department
• Demonstrate the ability to be adaptable, flexible and willing to receive feedback
• Knowledge of proper color use, printing practices and layout
TYPICAL WORKING HOURS
The graphic designer works from marketing and communications office in the Karl Miller Center, which is typically open from 9AM – 5PM Monday through Friday. Office hours will be constructed by term based on the graphic designer’s academic schedule and department needs. Office hours will be decided at the end of each term for the following term.
QUALIFICAITONS
• Portland State graphic design major
• Successful completion of sophomore portfolio review
• Maintain minimum enrollment (6 credits for undergraduates, 5 credits for graduate) for three out of four terms in the year
• Minimum 2.0 (3.0 for graduate) grade point average and maintain good academic standing throughout employment
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications
• Ability to frame design within brand standards while also incorporating your own original style
• Strong typographic, layout and illustration skills
• Ability to complete projects quickly (when necessary)
• Be able to apply your knowledge of design in an efficient manner
• Commitment to The School of Business mission, vision and values
• Positive attitude
