Design Internship at Tin House Publishing

Tin House seeks design applicants with a love of reading and a passion for book and publication design. Candidates should have strong print production skills and an interest in learning about the production process at an independent publishing house. The intern will work directly with the art director and senior designer.

Tasks:

Assist with all phases of print production for Tin House, including styling typography, creating and revising InDesign layouts, editing photographs, creating spot art, and participating in weekly production meetings
Design and/or update print and web collateral including schedules and itineraries
Support Publicity through design of print and web advertising including newsletters via Mailchimp and banners and graphics for social media
Brainstorm and assist in the creation of targeted promotional pieces including postcards and specialty influencer packages
Offer design ideas for book covers and interiors
Perform light assorted administrative duties including file prep for ebooks, scanning, archiving, and filing of completed projects
Availability and Pay:

This internship is based in Portland, OR office and cannot be done remotely.* We request that individuals be available to work 8–10 hours per week at a requested commitment of 6–8 months. The pay is the minimum wage for the area, which is $13.25 per hour in Portland.

*Due to COVID 19, the beginning of the internship will be offsite with some limited access to the office for very specific tasks and/or training. Individuals will need to have a computer with access to reliable internet and current Adobe Cloud design software. Microsoft office software is a plus but not a requirement.

Qualifications:

Must be proficient in Adobe InDesign and have some working experience / expertise in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. A familiarity with contemporary literature is helpful but not necessary. Other desirable qualities include a strong attention to detail and the ability to stay organized and to communicate precisely and effectively. Must work well independently and collaboratively, and budget time and multiple projects efficiently.
