The PSU Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative (HRAC) seeks a Communications Assistant to work alongside our Communications Specialist. HRAC’s goal is to help reduce homelessness and its negative impacts on individuals, families, and communities, with an emphasis on communities of color. The Collaborative brings together the expertise and skills of each of Portland State University’s colleges and schools, and collaborates with people experiencing homelessness, advocates, service providers, city and county policymakers, and other stakeholders.
We need someone with strong visual design skills with experience in graphic design, document layout and formatting. Web design skills and social media skills are a plus.
On a typical day you might:
Update content on our website, or design new website pages and layouts
Design and create posters for events
Design and create templates for reports and other documents, or apply existing templates to a new document
Draft newsletters and other email communications
Take photos and record videos at events
Post on social media
Organize and use our media library and the PSU media library
You will also:
Adhere to all HRAC policies and stay current on procedural changes
Create an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences
Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities and cultural backgrounds
Seek opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement
Adhere to all PSU policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment, Professional Standards of Conduct, and Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting
Minimum qualifications:
Enrolled in at least 6 Undergraduate credits
Meets all requirements for student employment listed in the HR Student Handbook
Experience in InDesign and other graphic design software to create graphics.
The ideal candidate will have:
Strong skills in Word, PowerPoint, InDesign, and Photoshop
Basic photography and videography skills
Familiarity with common social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
Demonstrated website and document design skills, including document layout, styles, and formatting
Excellent writing and editing skills, including outstanding spelling and grammar, and familiarity with common style guides (APA, Chicago, AP)
Experience updating website images and content using Drupal
Anticipated Start Date: week of April 4, 2022.
Typical working hours are up to 19 hours per week depending on your availability, with office work between 8:30AM and 5PM. Although you will have flexibility in scheduling, and the option to work remotely.
Your role will help us to address homelessness by ensuring that the public, government officials, the media, and other key stakeholders have accurate, up-to-date information on the scope of the issue and best practices for equitable solutions. We hope you’ll join us in this important work.
Compensation: The starting pay for this position will be between $14.25-$15.25 per hour, depending on experience in this type of position.
