What?
At our meeting yesterday afternoon, we unanimously decided that it was a terrific idea to have a design competition for the cover of a Scout Book, Pinball Publishing's exclusive custom pocket notebook. We are working on setting up an independent panel of judges comprised of local design professionals to select the design (or designs) that will grace the cover of our inaugural Scout Book!

These little pocket lovelies will then be sold as a fundraiser for AIGA PSU. The first round is a general fundraiser, as we thought it was a good idea to begin securing part of the $6000 we have to raise as part of our budget contract. Future editions will be delegated fundraisers for particular AIGA PSU projects or events. We're purchasing an edition of 500 for the initial run, which makes them fractions of a cent more than one dollar. We're obviously going to sell them for more than one dollar, so it's pure fundraising glory.

Not just one.
That's right, this is just the first in a series of many. We saw it only fitting to have the theme of this one be "Hey, Hi, Hello" and the above bits about meeting and greeting. We even have plans for the second round of Scout Books: the visual identity for the senior show, once finalized, will grace the cover of another batch of Scout Books. After that, who knows! Money raised from previous editions will fund future editions, and with the anticipated success of our well-designed, useful products, we will have many more Scout Books to come.

For reals, wtf is a Scout Book?
The Scout Book leads the way in custom notetaking. Pinball Publishing has developed this terrific product, all set to go once it receives your custom cover artwork, color choice and selection of interior paper. Made with 100% recycled paper, it boasts a chipboard cover and an interior of either lines, a grid or plain paper. It even comes with rounded corners! What a nice finishing touch. At 3.5 by 5 inches, this little guy can fit in your pocket, your hand, your purse, a Christmas stocking: you name it.

AND they're affordable.

Why is Pinball so great?
Pinball is an optimally friendly, extremely knowledgable offset printshop that focuses on making your custom order exactly what you have in mind. Besides being the only folks in town to offer the Scout Book, they are a throwback to the good old days when you actually had a relationship with your printer. They're design sensitve, creative, service-oriented and a GREEN printer. They use all recycled paper and soy inks, and offset their energy usage with renewable resource options. Super rad, right? What's the deal about submitting my artwork to be the cover design?
That is THE question we're looking for!
The deadline is May 11. Yes, I know it's in two weeks. But with a little fire under your butt, you should be able to crank out something beautiful, yes?

Specs for this whole thing:
Please click here to read about the Scout Book from the horse's mouth (what a weird analogy)
Please click here to read about how to prepare your file for the printshop.

Creative specs:
+ The theme is general, but specific. "Hey, Hi, Hello." Nice to meet you. First impressions. Salutations. Let's get to know each other. Get corny or get original, get crazy or stay simple. Use type exclusively or don't use it at all. Interpret those phrases any way you'd like, incorporate them or not. Make up your own that fits within the theme.

+ Feel free to design and submit a series. We're open to whatever you think would be a good idea to have on a pocket notebook. We will leave it up to our judges to select one, two, or even five cover styles, so it is possible more than one of your designs will be chosen to print.

+ Please be willing to accept color suggestions once the final style(s) are chose. If the color you chose makes or breaks the design, no worries. But if the judges happen to choose four green designs and one blue design, we might have to make some adjustments.

Technical specs:
+I would really like to upload a template you can place your artwork into, I just can't do it right now. If you're having trouble with these technical specs, just hold out for a terrific illustrator template.+

+ Your file should be 7 inches wide by 5 inches tall, with a 1/8 inch bleed. The back cover will be on your left 3.5 inches, and the front cover will be on your right 3.5 inches.
+ Please view the above link for the list of available colors, and set your design to one of these colors.+ Make sure your image is 300 dpi.
+ Design in CMYK, not RGB.
+ We'll have a little box included for your name, so know that will be on there. (Oh mighty template, don't wait too long!)

Some details about voting/how and why we decided on this
We wanted to offer the opportunity to contribute feedback or crucial opinions for anyone who wasn't at the meeting and was expecting our promised two-meeting turnaround time for voting on group issues, especially ones that spend group money. We had a unanimous and enthusiastic "YES!" so we proceeded with posting this information-filled call for submissions. We understand that Fridays are impossible for some people and we don't want to disenfranchise those people. This is a more time-sensitive situation than most will be as we're under a deadline to spend our remaining budget (spend by May 30! use by June 30!) so please forgive our haste if it stepped on your toes a little. Feel more than welcome to voice concerns either directly in this post or via email to friendsofgraphicdesign@gmail.com.

I think this is it….
I will post meeting minutes as soon as I get a spare minute.
Thanks for your time and attention! Get working on those Scout Book designs!
