Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen of the Baltimore design studio Post Typography give a behind-the-scenes peek at the design process, illustrated with never-before-seen projects that fell short, missed the mark, or were blown off-target by the fickle winds of client taste.

Originally conceived as an avant-garde anti-design movement, Post Typography specializes in design, illustration, lettering, and conceptual typography with additional forays into art, apparel, environments, and design theory. Founding partners Nolen Strals and Bruce Willen have collaborated on visual and music projects for more than twelve years, beginning with hand-printed posters and progressing to higher profile projects for clients such as the New York Times, U.S.  Green Building Council, John Legend & The Roots, and Penguin Books.

Strals and Willen teach classes in design and typography at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and are authors of Lettering & Type, published by Princeton Architectural Press. Post Typography’s work has received numerous fancy-pants design awards including recognition from the Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, Print Magazine, the Society of Publication Designers among many others.

Following the talk, Strals and Willen will field questions about The Wire, punk rock, and graphic design, and will have copies of their books available for defacement.
