When Janine Vangool was little, she happily tapped letters on her mother’s machine. She loved seeing thoughts become tangible, and marvelled in the satisfaction of seeing her words printed on the page. It was her first taste of both graphic design and publishing — topics that would become her profession and passion. A simple typewriter ribbon tin purchased on eBay reignited Janine’s early obsession with the typewriter. In search of more artifacts and ephemera over the next decade, she collected from the rich, graphic history of the typewriter. The Typewriter: a Graphic History of the Beloved Machine is a richly illustrated book full of never-before published typewriter memorabilia, intriguing historical documents and entertaining anecdotes. Janine’s presentation will go through the 150+ year history of the machine through the graphic design and advertising that tells its story over the decades. Get your tickets here.

About Janine Vangool 
Janine Vangool is the publisher, editor and designer of UPPERCASE, a quarterly print magazine for the creative and curious. UPPERCASE publishes content inspired by design, typography, illustration and craft. Her magazine and books celebrate the process of making, the commitment to craft and the art of living creatively. Janine has worked as a freelance graphic designer in arts, culture and publishing and has also taught typography and publication design at the college level. She has a particular fondness for typewriters, a passion that has inspired a book about their graphic history. She lives in Calgary, Canada with her novelist husband and curious 5-year-old son.
