Be Honest 2020 FAQ

Posted on May 8th, 2020 by Be Honest

Be Honest is the annual PSUGD student portfolio showcase! Every spring, sophomores, juniors, and soon-to-be graduating seniors come together to show off their work to professionals and the community at large. It’s a valuable opportunity for graphic design students to gain experience presenting their work and engaging with the community. It’s also an opportunity for creative professionals to check out all the great things coming out of PSUGD!

This year’s Be Honest may be 100% online, but not to worry—it’s still 100% PSUGD. Got questions about how things are going to work this year, or what Be Honest is? We’ve compiled some of our most frequent ones below! Check it out!

A Be Honest profile card

Can sophomores participate?
Of course! Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are all encouraged to take part!

I’ve heard we need to make a “booth” for Be Honest if we participate. What does that mean?
The Be Honest website will feature student profiles that look like the image to the right so people can find out more about you and the work you make. This “booth” (really a profile) is just our hub for connecting visitors with you! You don’t have to do anything to make it except fill out the sign up form.

Is this meant to be a portfolio!?
No! The work sample uploads are not going to serve as a portfolio of work, you should have links going to where your work is shining! Images are going to be fairly small so don’t include things that need to be read or have a lot of information in them. Save the detailed work for your website, or one on ones! See below for more info about image dimensions.

But… my work isn’t ready!
Yes, it is! Show it off.

When is the last day to apply and upload my work?
Friday, May 8th by the end of the day!

Do I need to have a portfolio website?
Nope! You don’t need to include a website if you don’t have one, but you can include your Instagram or any other social media if you’d like—even your LinkedIn!

My website is under construction! Can I link it when I register and keep it private for now?
Of course! We can’t add images or links after you sign up, so feel free to submit any information that will be ready by the event now.

Images & Sizing

What kind of files can I submit?
JPEG, PNG, and GIF please! (720px by 720px). Keep file size as small as possible. No PDF, MOV or MP4/M4V files plz 🙂

What are the size restraints of the images for the profile?
All images will be square, 720x720px, but will look smaller on most screens. Images not submitted as squares will be cropped to fit.

Can I submit a GIF as an image?
Yes, please make sure it is square (720px). Please also make sure it is small enough—we would prefer no images files over 250K.

Do I need to make a PDF of my work? How do I link a PDF?
Please no PDFs! Only images of your work may be submitted. If you participate in the professional one-on-one portion of the event, feel free to share a PDF there if you like.

Participating

I have to work the day of Be Honest, can I still participate?
Yes! You do not have to actively be present to have a presence at Be Honest. Submit work for your profile, and have links to all of your external sites or social media.

Do I have to sign up for one-on-ones with design professionals?
Nope! One-on-ones are completely optional, but we encourage you to sign up if you can! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for networking.

So, where do I sign up to meet with a design professional?
A sign up notification is headed your way soon! Please be on the look out for when sign ups are open! You will have the opportunity to sign up to talk with many different professions for 15 minutes. We can’t guarantee to match you with exactly the person you want, but we’ll try!

So, I signed up to speak with a design professional. How do I fill the time I have with them?
You can choose to fill the time any way you’d like! You could ask for feedback on specific projects or use your 15 minutes with them as time to ask about them! This is an amazing opportunity to speak with someone who has experience in the industry you’re studying to be a part of! Research the people you’re going to speak with and the company they work for.

Talking to professionals make me uncomfortable!
It is okay to be nervous! Remember, professionals are fun and friendly, just like you. Take a deep breathe and relax, they are here to help you, and to answer your questions. Here are some example questions to get you started: “Do you have any advice for a Junior in design school?” “What does a day working at _____ look like?” “What made you interested in design?” “Can I get your feedback on this project I am working on?”
